My SMART METERS Letter ...and lots more

Post by KUS »

ALERT: LETTER OF NON-CONSENT FOR SMART METER
and
BC Hydro Smart Meter Specialist Department Date:__January 27, 2012_________________
6911 Southpoint Drive,
Burnaby, B.C. V3N 4X8

Attention: Mr. Charles Reid, Mr. Gary Murphy, Ms. Cindy Verschoor, BC Hydro, Corix Utilities and /or assignees thereof:

Dear Messrs. Reid, Murphy, Ms. Verschoor, BC Hydro Smart Meter Team, and Corix Utilities:
Re: B.C. Hydro Account # _XXXX-4905-XXX_ Address: _XXXX Rd, Victoria BC_

I contacted B.C. Hydro to give clear notice that I am refusing to allow the installation of a Wireless "Smart Meter" on my property. I made it clear in my communication that I am refusing to have my privacy rights violated. I also made it clear that my decision to refuse a Wireless Smart Meter is also to protect my health and the health of my family.
I called Corix who said they would not cancel the installation order and I would have to call BC Hydro.

Your representative “Sam” (who returned my call and refused to further identify herself) responded on behalf of B.C. Hydro that the installation would go ahead, which serves as an acknowledgement of B.C. Hydro's receipt of my notice of refusal. I indicated I may wish to pursue a property line drop where the meter is the maximum distance from my home. This may take some time and perhaps this would not occur by the installation date planned. She then indicated she would contact the RCMP after I suggested I would respond and act against any attempt to install a smart meter against my wishes on my property. The RCMP have contacted me and left a message. I will return their call but I am unclear as to what end. I know my rights. I feel the installation of SMART meters is equivalent to threatening myself and my family and I reserve the right to defend myself and them. I have no wish to harm any installers or representatives. I have made it abundantly clear to her and now to you: THERE WILL BE NO SMART METER INSTALLED ON THIS PROPERTY. If your representatives choose to perform this installation against my wishes and perhaps during my absence you will also find that your meter will again be removed by a qualified person and a certified analog meter will be re-installed. I take no responsibility for the safety, care and functioning of your SMART meter which you may then again pick up at my location.

I am told I am given no options in this regard and I must fill out a form and meet with a B.C. Hydro representative, and if I do not, my current meter will be exchanged with a Wireless Smart Meter. Therefore, you are saying that I must comply with the conditions created in your letter before I can exercise: my right to privacy, my right to protect my health and the health of my family and my property rights.

There is no basis in law for nullifying a clear and unambiguous exercise of rights by imposing fictitious conditions that do not exist in law.
CONTRARY TO YOUR ASSERTIONS, ANY FAILURE OR REFUSAL BY ME TO ENGAGE IN CONSULTATION WITH B.C. HYDRO OR ITS AGENTS CANNOT AND WILL NOT REVOKE OR NULLIFY MY REFUSAL OF CONSENT TO THE INSTALLATION OF A WIRELESS SMART METER ON MY PROPERTY OR PREMISES.

The B.C. Hydro Smart Metering Program raise some very troubling ethical issues. Electricity is an essential service that we cannot live without. We have only one electricity provider and so are locked into this essential service. Now the sole provider is imposing, without consent, Wireless Smart Meters in our homes, workplaces and neighbourhoods. I have the following questions for B.C. Hydro:

1. Why do the residents of B.C. have no say in whether they want to protect their privacy by refusing to allow devices that disclose personal details, such as their electricity use patterns; information the police currently need a warrant to obtain?
2. We, who have written to B.C. Hydro refusing Wireless Smart Meters, are legitimately concerned about the potential health consequences of the manmade, pulsed microwave radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation emitted by these devices. Have we reached a time in B.C. when individuals, in an effort to protect their personal health and the health of their families, can no longer choose to avoid perceived dangers in their very homes?
3. Are we at a place in B.C. where we have no choice but to allow our neighbourhoods to be contaminated by manmade, pulsed microwave radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation emitting constantly at street level from multiple Wireless Smart Meters and wireless infrastructure; to have no choice but to have our children play in streets and communities where their little bodies are subjected to a soup of manmade, pulsed microwave radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation which we believe poses health risks and concerns us greatly as parents and caring people?
4. B.C. Hydro is a monopoly, owned by the public. Is it appropriate for corporations like BC Hydro to impose conditions on customers who wish to register refusal of a new Wireless Smart Meter? Is it appropriate for our utility company to intimidate customers in attempts to force them to forego their rights to health, privacy and the welfare of their families?
5. What law or regulation gives B.C. Hydro the right to place a two-way radiofrequency telecommunications device on my home without my permission?
The B.C. Clean Energy Act is being touted as a the authority for B.C. Hydro to install Smart Meters. Nowhere in that Act or the regulations is there any mandate to install Wireless Smart Meters. There is no reason that B.C. cannot provide its citizens with Wired Smart Meters, as do Idaho or Italy. The B.C. Government has not mandated Wireless Smart Meters in its legislation or in its regulations. That arbitrary decision is being forced on every B.C. household and business without authority.
I insist that B.C. Hydro reconsider its Wireless Smart Metering Program. Fair and reasonable accommodation, without undue financial costs and penalties, must be made for those who, like me, will not allow a Wireless Smart Meter to be installed. I am not willing to meet with B.C. Hydro but I wonder to what end, this letter explains my issues..
Executive members of the Coalition to Stop Smart Meters are willing to meet with B.C. Hydro on my behalf to address my concerns.
If you would like to set up an appointment to meet with these representatives, please send written notice of such request to Sharon Noble at and Una St. Clair at with a copy to me.

Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Markus Koloska BSc CSO CRSP

I can see the main point --> lack of consent to be radiated or submit to privacy invasions. For me, this is my biggest concern about smart meters.

There are arguably other health risks and privacy invasions that people readily accept, and could be worse for your health or privacy... for example:

1. Cell phone use ==> likely fries your brain, but we have choice to use cell phones
2. Wifi in the house ==> more brain frying, but we have a choice to go wired
3. Using any search engine such as GOOGLE ==> MASSIVE invasion of privacy (read the Google privacy statement), but we make the choice to use Google
4. Using a credit card ==> you are being tracked, but we make the choice to use a credit card.

Everyone has control over the use of these technologies. I don't have a cell phone and I don't have wifi in the home. That is my choice.

So, to me, it comes down to the issue of THE-MAN forcing these devices on us without our consent to the health risks or privacy issues -- it's a slippery slope ... this is likely worth the fight.

The one big unfortunate thing about fighting BC Hydro is STRESS. The smart meters are causing a lot of stress to people, and the medical effects of stress are quite well documented. What if the medical effects of this stress exceed the smart meter effects?

Smart meters.

Post by 57palm »

Good job Marcus. I too after some deliberation have decided that I am against the installation of a smart meter on my home. I have however taken a different approach. I fabricated a steel cage with 1/2 inch tube steel welded together then I bolted it over the meter and welded the bolts to the frame. The only way to remove this will be to cut it off with a grinder or torch.

This cage has been over my meter for a number of months. In December I received a call form Corix asking that I call back to discuss the replacement of my meter. I have not returned their call. They informed me I am scheduled to have my meter replaced January 26th. So far it has not happened. I have not called Corix back for a few reasons. First and foremost I do not have any agreement with Corix in any way. I am a customer (owner) of BC Hydro and really have nothing to discuss with Corix the installation Contractor. In addition I have also been informed that any conversation with Corix simply becomes an effort on their part to convince, cajole, and in general intimidate you into complying.

There are many issues to consider about smart meters. Health, privacy, financial cost, political they are all valid in my opinion. For me it is pretty simply, I do not have all the facts on any of these complicated issues but I do know a few things.

Most significantly the Liberal Government has legislated this change to happen in accordance with the BC clean air act. They have allowed BC Hydro to make changes to every home building and neighborhood without any independent review and oversight. This also includes the spending of approximately $1,000,000,000.00 of our rate paying dollars about $300 for every person in the province. In my house this adds up to about $1200 coming out of my pocket. The same Liberal government when asked about the concerns of citizens simply states that it is a minority of people who are unhappy and the program will go through no matter what. These guys are world class Jerks!. Do they not realize it is us the Voting public they are here to work for? Just another bunch of closed door Liberal undemocratic BS.

Also of note for me personally is the complete lack of common sense this program is being put through with. If you are the CEO of hydro planning to implement a one billion dollar program which alters every individuals home in the province would it not be sensible to carry out some research or small test/survey to gauge public response? It does not take a lot of thought to figure out that you just maybe upsetting some people, the people who you are working for. Most upsetting is Hydro's after the fact response to the public outcry. They are simply running adds to ensure us that "smart meters are good". The most compelling advertisement they can come up with is that smart meters will allow faster responses to power outages. What a bunch of junk. So lets see, it takes two hours to restore you power with a smart meter, and it take s two hours and 5 minutes without one because they had to wait for a few phone calls to come in. What a bunch of insulting Bull Crap!

Hydro executives do your fat cat job right. We already know about your excessive wages, pensions and doctoring of financial records. Now please earn your pay and serve the people of the province properly. Fix this mess before it becomes another BC Ferries fast cat failure!.

Much more to say but really where do you stop on this one. It never fails to surprise me just who and how many people I know are really fired up about this. I sure hope this comes to light at the next provincial election. Idiots!

thanks all for your comments. And I do see Eastside's point in the other thread, but you know what? NEWSFLASH: WE are never going to see any savings, only larger bills....and more dams and more generators and more radiation of whatever kind and however harmful (or not so harmful, we shall see).

As for this little issue-I am rewiring my house to make the WIFI a plug-in option only when I wanna sit in the yard or have a visitor, a $100 and a couple hours project. Worth it? Who knows, I don't mind the effort if it can prevent even a small health issue.
-My remote phone has long not been used, 3 years now and yes it was convenient and great and all that.....but I can WALK to the phone and answer it or NOT....it is not that important.
-My cell phone lives in the van or truck and I rarely talk on it. My daughters is turned off whenever I catch her with it on

The key issues Mike had bang on :!: And yes, Hydro is causing me stress....but I am one of those people that cannot let anything slide....and if they succeed, I will have stress til I die, move or go to jail trying to escape the meter that will glare at me in defeat.....and Billybob's cousin may cause me more severe stress in jail.

One thing tho nobody has mentioned and that is the inherent APATHY most Canadians seem to be afflicted with.....it is NOT a "can't fight city hall" resignation or being a nice, amiable person, it IS APATHY make no mistake about it, usually maybe with a little whine.....and that is truly embarrassing
The recent OCCUPY movement was perhaps misguided and lame but it was the most backbone I have ever seen shown in NA. :!:
You people (and I am still a squarehead so being happy to be a landed immigrant is a priviledge)....YOU are the owners of the PROBABLY LAST most amazing, beautiful, bountiful, vast, naturefilled, thrilling country in the world....THE WORLD :!: Drinking water, no hairy big spiders, salmon, forests, polar bears, other huge predators that thankfully don't eat humans, agricultural lands, mountains, oceans, you name it it's here in abundance, shrinking daily......AND GOVERNMENT AND BIG MONEY IS FUCKING IT UP

SMARTMETERS as tiny part, CELL TOWERS, COAL BURNING GENERATORS, DAMS, PIPELINES, TAR SANDS, POOR LOGGING PRACTICES, POOR RECYCLING, LITTERING, FUEL SPILLS, IMMIGRATION POLICIES RESULTING IN OVERHARVESTING, BIG GAME TROPHY HUNTING, NO SOLAR, WIND OR ALTERNATIVE ENERGY REWARDS PROGRAMS, V8 ENGINES AND PICKUP TRUCKS IN THE CITY FOR THE WANNABE, ASBESTOS PRODUCTION AND USE, TRAFFIC LIGHTS EVERY BLOCK ON THE TRANS CANADA HIGHWAY    RAW TIMBER EXPORTS, NO URBAN PLANNING AND SPRAWL, NO PUBLIC TRANSIT TO SPEAK OF, NO RAIL TO SPEAK OF, TAX EVASION AND OTHER PUBLIC CRIMES WITH DICK ALL FOR PENALTIES SO SOCIAL PROGRAMS MUST BE SLASHED, NO PREVENTION FOR LETTING CHINA AND THE USA (the two most undoubtedly selfish, use it up-throw it away-move on "Me first" nations in the world) BUY CANADIANS OUT, THEY OWN THIS PLACE NOW.

Unless a real, intelligent, kick ass leader of the Margaret Thatcher type steps in for this country TO STOP AND REVERSE THIS, this is a done deal anyway....

Me, I'm gonna continue to do my little part, reduce, reuse, recycle, give my money to Christian, Humanitarian and Environmental causes, take sledge hammers to smart meters....

I've given up the cordless phone as well ... My units live in there cradles now as 'call display' units ... Wired phones are readily available @ garage sales & thrift stores ... Smart Meter Program for the Layman

Post by What's On »

You guys have brought tears to my eyes, music to my ears....need I say more.
OK, here is the skinny. A year ago I read a promotinal article by Hydro about the new Smart Meter Program. I became suspicious when they stated that the new meters would save electricity; this was like telling me a digital speedometer would improve my gas mileage. Further investigation then revealed that descriptions like 'direct connect, two way communication, and web portal (all Hydro's spin words) really meant wireless technology (they now have to state this on their website). We, my family had just purged our household of wi-fi devices for health reasons and now I would be forced sleep with a one watt transmitter a foot away from my head. (for a reference a cell phone is less than 1/2 a watt). So in a panic, I contacted Hydro and I was told my account would be placed on a delay/do not install list and that my concerns would be adressed. Fast forward ......thousands of concerned residents ask for confirmation in writing and voila...... the delay list turns into confirmation of installation but at a later date. The citizens of B.C. initiate an investigation of Hydro' methods by the ombudsperson of B.C. It is then discovered that the Smeter has not one, but two reciever/transmitters, one at 900mhz to transmit your electrical profile (wirelessly) to your neighbor's Smeter, and on to the next household, until the transmissions are recieved by the 'hub house' (non disclosed by Hydro) . The signal activity at this location lies well outside of Hydro's frequency specifications (determined from one isolated meter in a lab with the gain turned down). (Imagine when the entire grid is up and running). How about this as an apartment or condo scenario: 37 Smeters adjacent to your newborn's crib: Check out some independent emf radiation readings on Youtube. What happenned to the Precautionary Principal in these situations? And as for the second 2.4 mhz reciever/transmitter (Yes, Hydro had to modify their website again), well it will be communicating wirelessly with all your new 'Smart appliances (Energy Star, the new global standard), collecting your complete electrical profile for transmission back to Hydro, where your personal information/activity will be data mined and sold to various marketing/manufacturing industries. Welcome to the twilight zone. Fast forward again....The Privacy commission of B.C., through public outcry investigates Hydro's Smeter program and makes recommentations for 13 violations. Simultaneously, the Liberal Government makes modifications of the B.C. Privacy Act to accomodate the data that Smeter can acquire.
Fast forward again.....Inform, educate, placate almost every municipal Counselor and Mayor in B.C. resulting in 70% of the municipalities of B.C. voting in favour of a moratorium to stop this program, and yet energy Minister Rich Coleman says 'forget about it'. Where is democratic process? FYI- A member on the board of directors for Hydro also sits on the board for Corix Utilities, your friendly Smeter installer. The icing on cake however, was when Saanich council was voting for the moratorium and Mayor Leonard excused himself from voting because his pension fund is heavily invested in Corix. So now we are almost up to date; 25,000 letters of non-consent sent to Hydro from the public (Hydro operates on assumed consent, so this has proven to be our holy grail), a recent referendum announcement (go to stopsmartmeters.ca), two class action lawsuits, one filed under human rights and the other a medical suit for those sufferring fro EHS (go to citizensforsafetechnology.org), (please, please make a donation for the legal fund), and best but not least, we have Kus at arms with the RCMP and Ruben constructing defensive structures at his household. Wild West baby! Special mention to Jimmy for setting up an early warning system for us (brilliant).
We are presently researching why the B.C. Utilities Commission was exempt from reviewing this program and the reclassification of this program through the Clean Energy Act. There is a global Smart Grid vision that is like a runaway train. And in its trail there is a wake of increased electrical bills, privacy concerns, security hacking issues, massive cost overruns and illness for those who are Emf sensitive.
Really F*#*ing green initiative
This is the tipping point. I plead that you educate yourselves and get involved. There is so little time. What is unfolding is doubleplus ungood.

THE BATTLE AGAINST SMART METERS HEATS UP.

June 6, 2012.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The battle against smart meters is heating up.

BC HYDRO IS UNDER SIEGE ON MULTIPLE FRONTS, and they know it.

According to insider sources, a quarter of a million households in BC
have OFFICIALLY notified BC Hydro that they WILL NOT ACCEPT a smart
meter.

This represents almost 14% of homes and businesses in the province and
doesn't even include those people who have put up signs but not
actually written to or called BC Hydro to object. (A far cry from the
"Less than 1%" that BC Hydro was claiming. They have since raised this
to 2%).

The number may be closer to 30% in the Greater Victoria region.

It is quite possible that we are approaching a turning point.

We need to keep the pressure up and, in particular, we need to get the
word out to the widest audience because it is people, like you and me,
that will stop this hugely ill-conceived program. But the only way we
will achieve this is by getting our message out to everyone across the
province.

BC Hydro is spending $12 million pushing their highly exaggerated,
inaccurate and often false propaganda in the media. (They increased
their advertising budget from $7.5 million when they realized the
battle they were facing.)

To fight them, we need to use the media as well. Radio ads, TV ads,
Newspapers and magazines. StopSmartMeters.ca
<http>
recently did a trial radio campaign in Victoria and saw an immediate
response in people signing up on our website.

We would like to take the message out to the whole province but, of
course, this costs money.

Many of you have very generously donated to the cause and we are
hugely grateful, but today we are putting out a special call to all of
you - more than 5000 people - to ask that you consider donating to a
specific project.

$20 each will raise the $100.000 we need to produce a TV campaign that
will reach millions of people across the entire province and galvanize
everyone into action against these devices.

As we have clearly seen, once the meters are in place they are likely
to cost you far more money. Please take a moment to consider whether
$20 now is worth it to stop this harmful technology?

A Citizens' Initiative CAN bring an end to this program and get the
meters removed from peoples' houses, but we need your support and the
support of everyone in the province to make it a success.

And when you've decided, please go to our website at:
StopSmartMeters.ca <http>
and help us fund - and be a part of - this ambitious TV campaign.

Thanks to all of you for taking a stand, and for whatever donations
you can manage.

Sincerely,

Steve Satow

on behalf of StopSmartMeters.ca

Dumb Meters

Post by Nobby Raish »

Good on you, guy! You're npot alone--tons of us have successfully resisted the installation. Easy for me--al I have to do is lock the front gate but lots of my neighbors have resisted easily thru sheer feistiness. My own objection is that I just don't want to be sucked ibto that technological black hole,
