Gareth,

Sandra and I will kite if there is wind. Regardless, count us in for $50 towards the site.

Cheers!

Hi

The idea is that if there is enough wind for all, then we can all sail. elsewise, it is up to the discretion of each participant. the main thing is that we all commit our pledge/entry fee regardless of the wind. I'm trying to organize door prizes (1 entry per pledge) and T-shirts for everyone that enters. So regardless if there is enough wind for all, we will at least have something to show for our efforts.

please commit.

Gareth
p.s. Dave also needs to know aproximately how much money will be raised, so that he can budget for upgrades/improvements.

Uh, I say forget the t-shirts, and put the money toward the site. Just my two cents tho...

The idea is that the shirts are sponsored by some of the local suppliers. that are already providing some sponsorship to the site. Your $50 will go directly towards the site.

ATTENTION

Due to a general lack of interest, Gareth and I have decided to cancel the Esquimalt to Dallas Rd fundraiser event. The idea of the event was to raise money for the new webcams on the BigWaveDave site. We will still be accepting donations on behalf of Dave for all of his hard work with this awesome site. We all know we'd be lost without it.

Anyone wishing to make a contribution to fund the new webcams can do so by mailing a cheque to the following address:

Big Wave Dave c/o Rob Gentleman
1010 Burnside Rd West
Victoria B.C.
V8Z 1N3

Please make your cheques payable to Dave Billenness (Big Wave Dave).
There is no set amount that we are asking for although $50 seemed like a common pledge. It is however, simply a donation, so please pay what you can afford. Every little bit counts.

Thanks for the support. :D

BWD Fundraiser Event... Do It.... Please Please Please

Gareth & gang...

Bummer that you've lost interest on this event idea. I expect to be in town some of those days and I thought it was a great idea.. I'd probably be the only one to do it pretty much wind or no wind... Seems I'm the only longboarder on the "De Fuca" side and the rare sailor who could get away with the trip safely in any wind to 25 knots. :o

If you are organizing an event it comes with risk of course. The trip should include a duty boat for the fleet... Much more important than T shirts btw.

Perhaps little BWD.CA silkscreened flags for our kites and rigs would be nice and potentially promoional for BWD. Blah blah blah... Anyway why don't you do it between the 5 & 8th on a volunteer basis. Sailors must donate $50 min.... Have their time witnessed by someone at both ends of the course. Boobie prizes for 3 placings...

#1 Fastest Elapsed time

#2 Fastest Corrected time

#3 Longest Elapsed time

Suggested Corrected time Formula. Corrected time in minutes =
Vic Harbour Windspd^2 * Time(in hours) = Corrected time in minutes

IE 12 Knots * 1.5 hours = 216 Minutes

There's my idea.. feel free to work with it as I will feel free to try & convince Windsurfing Canada and the odd Formula guy to match my entry fee.

Cam R.
KC26 (Windsurf.CA volunteer)
(I'm Da old stick who halls da old longboard down the steps to sip the Sea @ Cook St)
PS For the wind godesses... Those are Boobie Bird prizes not boobies
PSS... Yes I would win on Corrected time with a paddle & 0 Knots wind.

Fundraiser and Safety Options

Hi Gareth and others,
I can sympathize/appreciate all the effot that you put into this. It must be a little disppointing to feel that you have to cancel it. I wonder if the "lack of interest" (I am assuming you feel there is a lack of interest for participation, rather than "you" lost interest) is partially due to the timing of the event. Early August is often a vacation time for many. An alternative option for the future is to have some sort of event at Nit where safety issues are somewhat less complicated and the wind conditions are a little more predictable.

One note on having safety boats. I race open ocean outrigger canoes and I understand how critical these boats are, especially in rough conditions as I have personally hauled people out of the water. Having enough escort boats for a field of surfers that will spread out is important and also a difficult task for the boats. One thing we do in outrigger is have meetings and strategy plans with the safety boats so that each boat understands what part of the pack they are watching.

Many people use this website...I'm sure that some of them know people with boats that are suitable for fishing off Juan de Fuca and as well, we know that charter fishing organizations use this site. Should any events be planned for the future, perhaps they could be approached for some volunteer assistance by donating their time, boats, and gas. The auxillary may also be interested from a potential training perspective.

Cheers
Cindy

Hi Folks.
I'm not sure if people have made other arrangements to make a donation to this site but I've only received one cheque. :( It seemed like most people were willing to contribute a while ago. Hopefully that hasn't changed.
If you use this site, please support it by making an affordable donation.
Thanks
Rob :D

Still just one donation :? :? Hopefully it's a big one. I spoke to Dave last night and he said he's received $140 since July. Pretty sad. We can do better than that.
He also said there is a direct relation between the sum of the donations and the clarity of the webcams. If you want to count the bubbles in the froth of the whitecaps, better get a cheque in the mail!
To the few who have made donations, thank you, they are very much appreciated. To the rest, let's make an effort to help Dave out. This site doesn't run itself.
Thanks.
Rob

Hey, I know I haven't donated yet but will throw a check in the mail this weekend. I think it is up to all of us to get the rest of us to donate something. I know that $ is tight for almost everyone but think of life without this site....I cannot do it. It makes it soooo easy for me to continue windsurfing and making great friends too. I'm on the bandwagon now so lets chuck in some money to keep the site running as well as it has for the last year. DOODS!!
