New Google Wind Maps

Post by bwd »

Thanks to lots of hard work by Anthony (aka Keen), the wind vectors are now available on Google Maps:
http://www.bigwavedave.ca/latest.php?di ... &file=main

Here are some of the cool features:

- The wind vectors auto update on the map.

- Hovering over a wind report marker brings up the detailed wind info with a small plot. Clicking on it brings up a larger plot.

- The map can be zoomed in/out like a normal Google Map. You can switch between Terrain view (default), Satellite view and Map view. You can use the Island Map and South Map buttons at the top to show views close to the original maps.

- Webcam locations are shown on the map, click to see the latest image.

- Sailing site locations are given with links to the wiki.

- Marine forecast links are shown.

- Use the Control box to select what to show on the map.

- Image overlays can be shown. Right now it is the visible satellite image and a surface observation image. Hopefully the 2km/4km infrared and satellite image and radar will be shown in the future.

Let us know if you have any questions or if something is not working properly for you, and thanks again to Anthony for this great new addition to the website. Thanks also to the beta testers for their comments (Morewind, Winddoc, Cindy, Kus and RD).

Oh and eventually I'd like to get rid of the original South Island and Island maps...does anyone have a problem with that?

Feel like a total dink for requesting anything after all the hard work... but would it be too much to ask to have the swell conditions come up on scroll over for Hein and Halibut? They are always the first things I check, and I loved having the current conditions readily available (especially when I reload every 20 seconds waiting for the 1 hr update!).

Other than that, wow, love the upgrade. Totally no need for the old maps now! Beauty!

Don't feel bad for asking since comments and suggestions are really appreciated. Yeah the popup info and mini plots were my (small) contribution to the project. I intentionally left them off since it is a bit of a pain to get the info. That part of my program doesn't have the info due to some bad programming on my part. It is doable and I will add it soon. Thanks for the comments.

Just noticed the wave data on scroll-over, thanks a bunch! Now we should start a thread to see if anyone else wants the old maps..... I sure don't need em!

I like the old map if I just want an overview of the wind conditions; it loads so much faster, especially if I'm in a remote place with slow internet connection. But the bells and whistles (especially wind graphs) on the new version is way better if I need to think about it.
