Ten years ago today I took my first kitesurfing lesson with Marty at Nitinat. I just had to take a day off work to celebrate the occasion and get on the water. I met up with Dave C and his family and then hit the beach. It was properly windy and I opted for the 8m. Although I had my doubts about it, that turned out to be a good decision. The wind was very clean and consistent for my first hour. After a couple of laps I headed upwind for the Knob point. The wind was perfect for charging upwind with my surfboard planing beautifully on the reaches toward the point. After I reached the point I went hunting for wind swell. I found some above the Caycuse river and went back and forth having a blast. I made my was down past the main beach area and went down to the village continuing my search for wind swell. Found some pretty good ones there too. I then made my way back up to the main beach area. I had been practicing my tack turns throughout my session and was near the main beach area when I tried another one which went pair shaped. It was getting gusty and I think I got picked up a foot or so and then came down on the board but not with my feet. I lost kite awareness and when I did pay attention I saw it heading straight down into the water. The lines slacked and with the strong wind the kite inverted and twisted in a way I had never seen before. I knew I was going to have to punch out and self rescue. Happily Dave C was nearby and came to the rescue. He took my board to shore and then came back to haul my sorry self-rescued butt back to shore. I am so so grateful to have kitesurfing buddies like Dave. This is not the first time Dave has hauled me back to shore; the other time was at Gordons after a gear failure. Anyway after a long walk of shame, I called it a day and enjoyed a beer in the afternoon sun with Dave and Sarah. Grateful for a fantastic and memorable day on the water. 10 years and still loving kitesurfing!!
