Off road tent trailers

Post by KC7777 »

Hey,

Just got the wife a teaching job.....so now she has summers off and is promising to come to Nitinat and the Gorge with me. She doesn't really sail even though I promised to buy her a 80 - 85L quad.

Anyway, we were at the RV show in Chilliwack last night looking at off-road tent trailers.

Has anyone owned one of these off road tent trailers and are they worth the extra bucks. I would also use this thing in the winter to snow camp at Manning (they have heated mattresses!).

I don't really want to buy a full-on trailer as they always seem to leak and are a pain to pull up the hill in a foot of new snow (I have a 1/2 ton crew cab GM pick-up).

Also - any idea where used ones would be?

PS - it's pretty sad but now you can finance trailers with $0 down and amortize the payments over 20 years. So you can buy a brand new $16,500 trailer for approx. $142month taxes in.....seems good until you figure out that you are paying out approx. $34,000 over the 20 years. Though you can pay these loans off any time without penalty.

Check this 1st pic out.....this beast was almost 30' long.....2 King size beds.

The yellow Colemans look nice too.

Never quite understood the value of a tent trailer.
-they are cold, (heated mattress or not, Manning will be a divorce catalyst for ya, guaranteed)
-don't provide any protection from bears, thieves and such (or snowload),
-must be dried out so packing up in the rain/fog/snow means setting it up at home to dry again,
-always leak and also consequently rot the floor

The full size tires on a tent trailer are worth it tho over a regular unit!

I had the combo fiberglass trailer/ tent foldout trailer to try and get a larger, more solid and warmer unit, total loser proposition, cold, could hear a pin drop and it leaked....from brand new. The upside (only one) is they are light to tow. The triangular solid wall fold-up trailers are kinda cool tho. Or: Why not pack a decent tent and a propane fridge/freezer/stove combo and hot water demand heater in the truck or a light camper with some air bag support and an extra leaf? :?:

Or get one of those lightweight T@B trailers. I checked those out awhile ago and they offer everything a tent trailer does in a much more user friendly package with only a slight cost premium.

For some reason I sucked at finding the manufacture website but there are plenty of them sitting on the RV dealer lots along the Pat Bay Hwy here in Victoria.

Here is a local ad - http://victoria.en.craigslist.ca/rvs/2198748025.html

Also, there are options like this, that sort of combine the pop-out/up of a tent trailer when you need extra space with a conventional trailer, also about the same priec - http://www.pedenrv.com/Page.aspx/diid/2 ... e-16C.aspx

Off Road tent trailer.

Post by Winger »

When I used to go to Nitinat a lot I bought a regular tent trailer and had heavy springs installed and then put truck tires on it with inner tubes to give it more strength. I also coated the front with spray on insulation to protect it from the flying rocks coming off my Chevy Blazer 4x4. I could average 80k on the logging roads with no problems.. I would reach the campsite and the only sign would be 5 inches of gravel running down the middle of the top from the 4x4 tires... Bought it for $1500.00 with heater, stove and fridge...
