I will not be in Victoria for the meeting although I sure would like to be. Having put a rookie year of kite surf racing behind me I have a few observations/suggestions. Racing in the Hawaii Naish Kite Surfing Race Series and the Canadian National Kite Surf Racing Championships at Squamish this past year led to two very different experiences. The Maui/Oahu race series was fun, but compared to the Squamish races it was as if the Hawaii races were amateurish whereas the Squamish races were authentic sailing races. By this I mean that the Hawaii race series had non of the discipline of the Squamish races.

The Squamish races felt like I was participating in an international yachting event. I suggest that the Royal Victoria Yacht Club (RVYC) kite surf race organizing committee should contact the Squamish Yacht Club and garner as much information as possible regarding the Squamish Yacht Club’s experience this past summer.

I believe that the future of kite surf racing is in the hands of the yachting community. Further, the suggestion of a Cook Street venue is an excellent choice for a Victoria race. Cook Street has a remarkable viewing venue, coupled with great wind off shore. The racers will easily address the damn Cook Street bubble such that we could launch at Clover Point. Gordon’s does not offer the viewing venue that kite surf racing deserves.

Kite surf racing is to be included in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. Kite surf racing athletes will require a Canadian qualifying venue operating under International Sailing Rules. The Royal Victoria Yacht Club would be a great host for a qualifying event.

Victoria has always been a crucible for Canadian Olympic qualification and athlete development and I see the RVYC as an obvious partner for Olympic kite surf racing in Canada, so what the hell, let’s get on with it. Besides I really like the bar prices at the RVYC.

Let me know if there is anything I can do.

Cheers, Phil.

Folks:

A big thank you to the 6 people who came to todays meeting. Your input was valuable, and your continued effort will be as well

We made excellent progress in getting the basics in place for the fundraiser. I can't speak to the details yet, but

It will be a movie night
It will be at the RVYC
All proceeds will go to a cause that will be announced by BWD soon .

ALL OTHER DETAILS WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOON! Just as soon as we clarify them.

We did not plan the wind (windsurf & kiting) event for next year. We simply had too much to do, and not enough people.

The wind event planning will be done on another meeting. I imagine some planning will be done on the fundraiser night.

Phil,

Thanks for your input, and encouragement.

There is lots you can do, soon we will be making more headway on the kite event.

The team that came tonight is very busy with the fundraiser at the moment

However there will be another meeting soon specifically for the kite event.

To your point about professionalism. The RVYC has Olympic-level racing experience. We will bring nothing but the highest quality racing (and freestyle competition) to both windsurfing and kitesurfing IF we have the volunteers & general interest to do it.

There are many-many-many details that need to be organized. It will take about 15 people to each take ownership of some component of the event.

Soon we will be meeting to get the event details in place.

Phil, I hope I can count on you being at the next meeting. You clearly have lots of experience. It won't be for a few more weeks though.

Luke

Folks,

I'm spread too thin to take the lead on the kite/ wind event off of dallas road this summer.

However

The RVYC is still game to put some resources behind it.

Thinking one fun event to test the waters.

Anyone feels like volunteering, then maybe we can whip something together this summer.

 I see you still have trouble with that....until you can say the word "windsurf" or "boardsailing" or at least "poleskippering".... consequently I still get the sense this is a kite event and I'll come to watch, cheer and sip frosties :D

As an aside, it would then also seem important to have a RVYC replacement representative first to build on that very successful fundraiser we had at your excellent venue :!: 8)

sorry for the confusion

Windsurf/ Kite/ everything goes.....lets have a good time and have a few brews afterword

I am the rep from the RVYC.

The sentiment is that we need this to be a big-wave-dave/ victoria community lead event.

You guys lead and I will coordinate the yacht clubs resources/ boats/ safety etc etc etc

I would be happy to help organize a race committee to host an event with RVYC in summer 2012... I believe the logistics are fairly simple. Drop a few marks in a windward leeward, or olympic style course etc.. and raise /drop flags under the RRoS (racing rules of sailing). One boat from RVYC and two volunteers. MAX
I dont believe there is a permit requirement for City of Victoria but could be wrong.
I have only just spoken to Luke (skywalker) about the event after todays sailing and it sounds like he s just split a little thin between other commitments. I m just getting into the sport of kite boarding and feel this would be a great way for me to get involved.. so please pm me with details as i need as much info as possible... cheers.

Thanks Adrian,

the possibility of holding a fun event off of dallas sounds exciting to me.

I suggest we try one 'windfest style' event this summer and see where that takes us.

High time to put Victoria on the ktie event map I think
