Eastside wrote: A working wind meter would help promote Port Alberni's reliable conditions. It was white capping tonight. Appearing in the latest reports keeps this in people's minds. A Channel had a weather station at Harbout Quay which disappeared, then reappeared briefly, and has now vanished entirely. BWD was hooked up to this. Just a suggestion.

UPDATE: Windsurf247: Wild West Watersports is now open for windsurfing!! We have a rudimentary windsurfing launch in place that will get you on the water. It blew 20-25 yesterday from about 4-9pm. It's capping already so we should be in for another great afternoon. We'd love to see some familiar faces and get some more sails on the water today. Come and check it out!! We're at the end of Plywood Dr - through the gate and down the hill. - Sunday June 13, 11:13AM

kiting Port Alberni inlet
by coastalsoul ยป Wed Jul 14, 2010 9:51 am

Why I love Port Alberni inlet...

1. water is WARM!
(& its windy)

2 only 1 hour drive from Nanaimo ferry
(& its windy)

3. ...on paved highway !!!
(& its windy)

4. windy every afternoon - often ramps up a size for late show at 5pm
pretty much solid 9m and 6.5m- the other day I coulda been on a 5
it was liquid smoke like the Gorge!!!
(sometimes its really windy)

5. close (relatively- 1:20) to waves at Tofino

6. close (relatively :40m) to San Pareil/Parksvile

7. close (relatively :50m) to Nitnat just in case...
(& its windy)

8. 5 min. to town for supplies (...beer )
(& its windy)

9. large flat water areas behind log booms
(& its windy)

and the # 10. reason I like kiting here is the WATER IS SO WARM
yesterday i was kiting in shorts and tee.
(& its windy!!!)

but seriously this place is pretty awesome, ( did I mention its windy?)
all the above, plus friendly folks here putting it all together for your pleasure-
Matt Williamson "Yardsale" formerly of Windsure and Rob & "Sandy Beach" from Bigwave Dave are the hosts

the kite launch is a bit sketch right now for novices -It's a dock launch,
but there is rescue jet ski and upwind lessons available from the ski
and there is a proper launch underway

Day use fees are $10 to cover insurance and ongoing construction
camping and motels in Port Alberni nearby

check it out www.wildwestwatersports.com
and you can always stop in on your way in to or out from the 'Nat or LB

webcam up at http://www.bigwavedave.ca/webcams.php?cam=11
watch for the onsite wind meter coming later this week

see you on the water

Rod

BTW for those of you that dont have real jobs
there is a faresaver rate midweek on ferries til later this month?
Tue/Wed/Thur and there are no over height charges anymore

Thanks, Rod for your review of the new hot spot on the island.
We still would appreciate some extra helping hands to get the kite launch ready and get people on the inlet sooner! Contact Matt at 250 918-9463 (WIND) for more information. Thanks.

Alberni inlet water is not very salty. As of this past weekend, no jellyfish have been spotted in the water or on the beach so far.

oh yah, jelly is a regular there, but luckily we don't need our stinger suits when she's around.

Driving Directions

Hi,

I have driven thru Port Alberni 4 times in the past 2 weeks on the way to Nitinat....are there posted actual driving directions to WWW? ie coming in from the highway into PA....which roads left/right etc. I may have missed these directions so can someone re-post them? I saw the google map but that did not help. I would have stopped by but had no idea where the site was and being in a hurry to get sailing I did not want to drive around looking?

Thanks,
