Nitinaht

Post by Bobson »

The Windsurfing weekend, July 16-19th is the Western Canadian so it should be pretty packed with some buoys set up. Hope the weather cooperates. I haven't heard officially but I'm guessing it'll be formula, slalom and freestyle.....?? Anyone heard anything about this one..??
Good Times,
BOBSON!!

Hi Jude - I saw some beautiful Ditidaht art at last Sunday's Community BBQ and Sale and Gear Swap. The Guy named Rasta who does the carved feathers with windsports scenes and the Wildman WindGod faces could be great prizes, and much more meaningful than average factory produced shwag. Palapas Ventana did this in La Ventana Mexico (for the Race to the Island) with some local artists and the prizes were really different and held much more meaning.

Hi Greg,

I have advertised each year to no prevail for Ditidaht artists to set up stands at Wind Fest and to provide donation for prizes. =-( Thier work is rare and expensive and it would be fantastic to have available.

I agree that Rasta's work is nice - however, Rasta is from Sri Lanka (not Ditidaht). I like to be culturally sensitive and respectful to Ditidaht - and caution public misrepresentation.

This year I have purchased authentic Ditidaht artwork for the top prizes.

Cheers,
Jude

Hi Jude- I did not meet rasta, just saw his work and much of it looked like it was Ditidaht. Sorry about that. There is a carver on the main road before the new street on the way into the camp and his carving works look great!

Ditidaht Artists

Post by nitinaht_brat »

Hi Greg,

Andrew Mack is the carver I believe that you are speaking of...and yes he does wonderful work. I have one of his pieces in the store that was gifted to me when I re-opened in 2006. Andrew's carving shed is just being built and its on the main road to the campsite. Andrew is from Toquaht First Nation (Toquart area).

Recent Ditidaht carvers are Jimmy Chester, William Edgar, the late Art Thompson (world reknown), Cyril Edgar, Floyd Tate, Rick Williams; artists include Wayne Tate (excellent work - waiting to be discovered); basket weavers include Frances Edgar, Lou Durocher, Kathy Edgar, Julie Joseph and more.

You have inspired me to put more Ditidaht artwork information on the website! Kleco! Kleco!

windfest weather???

Post by skipro »

Just wondering if anyone has a better prediction for the weather than www.weathernetwork.com. Looks like rain sat sun. Looks like a great event, just hope there will be some wind, and possibly some sun. See you there!

Western Canadian Windsurf Championships Postponed to August

Post by nitinaht_brat »

Postponed – Due to the forecast of poor weather conditions.

The July 16 – 19 Western Canadian Windsurfing Championships at Nitinaht is postponed.

We aim to put on top notch events here at Nitinaht for our competitors, our spectators and our sponsors; and trust that you understand.
