I will be kiting on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand Nov 18th to Dec 10th and if anyone is interested in kiting this area over that time please call me, David, at 604-574-0429.

The area I go to is from Waikanae (Google Earth it – about 60 clicks North of Wellington on the West Coast) up to just North of Wanganui – an area I know since I grew up in Wanganui. I have kited many spots on both the North and South Islands of New Zealand for at least two months a year over the last 7 years and this area is the BEST. Reasonably consistent onshore and side onshore winds, sandy beaches and surf similar to Oregon Coast. Can vary from 6m to 16m but I mostly seem sail 10-14m.

If wind is Easterly then there is an estuary at Foxton (I stay at campground there, among others) at the mouth of the Manawatu River which is sailable at all states of the tide. Alternately one can always go down to Wellington and sail there on offshore wind days. If anyone interested I can give you the gen on campgrounds, cabins, motels, car rental, etc. If no wind I generally tramp (that's hiking here) the nearby ranges and mountains and no bears to worry about!

Because there are no large population centres close by it is pretty quiet sailing (like I have been solo more than I care to remember) so would be good to have some company on the water. The locale would not suit someone who likes the nightlife of Auckland but plenty of good country pubs around.

Anyway, New Zealand, Nov 18th to Dec 10th, surf kiting, David, 604-574-0429.
I will be sailing in the same area again in Jan/Feb/Mar 2012 – and up to New Plymouth area if wind.
