Hi Gang,

The family and I are doing an Oregon coast road trip this summer. Its been years since I was down on the south coast and last time I was there I slept in my car right at the pullout at Pistol. I'll have a little more inertia with me this time - an RV, wife and kids. Can anyone offer any beta on any family/RV friendly campgrounds close to Pistol. Thx.

I camped in a campsite called Indian Creek up the Rogue River. It was close to town. It had a restaurant in front which was popular at breakfast time with the locals. It is across the street from the river. We had no issues and I would go there again. There is a state park further up. Warmer and less fog off the coast. There is a campground just south of Gold Beach too.

Go to the Inn of the Beachcomber in Gold Beach and say you are a windsurfer/know about the pistol AWT comp/drop Ted's name and they will give you the bru deal which last summer was something like $40-50 for a nice ocean view room. Score points with the wife, at least for a night or two.

if you and the wife play golf, score a free RV spot and a cheap ($25??) round of golf at the gold beach golf course on the northside road, around 7mi in or on the south road, the larger (and pretty much only) private campground (sorry, will google the name of it....) just before lizard lake is quite nice for kids, space to ride bikes, firespots, riverside, warm and you can watch the jetboats go by, swim, they have a small store for ice cream (score kid points), fishing gear etc.. If you arrive in the dark, don't miss trying a night camping in the dunes just beside and south of the south jetty (go to the boat launch and marina, keep going past the airport, hit the gravel/sand and hide in the dune grass by the water....awesome, lifetime sleep...and hope for no Tsunami  but yeah....next day likely the jeep dood will politely ask you to leave...he's a nice fella
the kids/wife could ride horses out of the GB fairgrounds and it is a decent and very quiet spot to camp for a nominal fee and beach is right there! Lots of options.... Miss it already....have fun down there, how could you not!

I'm partial to Huntly Park which is about 7 miles up the Rogue River on the south side. Usually its warm in the morning and relatively inexpensive. I think tent camping is $12 or something. Most windsurfers don't go to this one because its about a 20 minute drive to the Rock/Cape but I think its the best campground in the area. You also don't know if its windy or not (unless you have the Gold Beach Municipal Airport windline or wireless on your phone...)

We used to stay at Huntley but not any more, mainly because:

What's with Gold Beach and "No Meth" signs? There's that no meth zone behind the DQ which is a total bummer because nothing chases a blizzard quite like a good hit.
