Add to our Westcoast Windsport Dictionary!!

Just came across a couple of items that might fit well into such a dictionary, encourage to add words, will collect and publish. Here's a start:

DING: a loss of a chunk of epoxy, G10, fibreglass, carbon etc. from an otherwise finely crafted and finished, highly expensive wind equipment item, resulting in rendering it useless, temporarily out of service and/or at least severely diminished in resale value

HATE: the increased level of enthusiasm experienced by incumbent sailors and their companions during acts of daring stunts or disasters, such as forward loops, 40 foot lofts or carving gybes into reefs; also used as a synonym for conditions resulting from exceptionally high windspeeds as in "lotsa hate in da strait"

OHNO SECOND: That minuscule fraction of time in which you realize that you've just made a BIG mistake, such as burying the board nose a tad too deeply into a waveface.

SALMON DAY: The experience of spending an entire day swimming upstream only to get screwed and die in the end, like finally getting through the wicked shorebreak into the windline only to snap a mast or one of your lines

SKUNKED: A day or part thereof away from loved ones with the expense of fuel, equipment, nerves and need-to-finish-the-"insert reno-project" time to pursue windsport only to find no wind

SWIPEOUT: An ATM or credit card that has been rendered useless because the magnetic strip is worn away from extensive use buying/replacing sailing equipment.

R.U.S.T.: Achronym for: Rotten (moldy), Used(as in paid for), Sport(wind/kite etc.), Toys......'RUST' requires west coast outdoor enthusiasts to replace cheesy equipment they find forgotten/stored in; out buildings, vehicles, boats etc. WATER SPLAT: As a windsurfer or kiter is launched to windward they SPLAT face first into the water. Provides entertainment to bystanders & warns others that a wind squall may be forthcoming.

Overoptimism - The overarching mental state wherein people believe that things will more likely go well for them than go badly. Case in point. Watching the flag after 5 hours of flopping aimlessly, shift around from outflow to inflow at 4:30pm at Nitinat Lake! WIND LINE!

Zoolanders: those are the guys that sail in front of the webcam then zoom home to look for snaps of themselves in the archive. they can only jibe in the one direction. (not guilty of course!)

Wind dummy: a sailor overtaken by overoptimism who goes out in a questionable contritions to show the rest of the group that it's OK. He also usually happens to be a good swimmer.

Sea Lion- local marine mammal, evolved from the Sea Kitty through lifelong consumption of local effluent and human toxic wastes, known to freak windathletes through territorial behavior, favors "k"nibbling on the hindquarters of same

Missionary Gybe- the simplest form of downwind change of direction methodology employed by those not wanting to run into immovable objects or a landmass, in the early (or very late) stages of the learning curve or simply by those who lack a combination of skill, courage, enthusiams or strength for other maneuvres or are plain avoiding to get wet; also a key component of survival sailing technique

Did I capture the essence of that, Mr. Bean??

Stitch'n Bitch- the event of kite, sail or harness repair by a significant other who doesn't really share your interests but has an aptitude for mending things much greater than your own

Mexican Gybe: Sail to opposite beach , jump off board (fake some sort of adjustment to confuse bystanders), set up rig on other tack, sail away !!!]"it's better than scraping dung off a squirming toddler's scrotum" BEAN's way of describing a good day.

SEWERED - getting sucked into using your new low volume board even tho your weight is twice your buddy's and the wind is dying (and ending up at Clover Point Outfall); also riding a bit too far down the line at....Barnacle Beach when things are far from ideal

BEARKING - a crosstraining exercise gone wrong involving kayaking, hiking, flip flops and the rather intimate viewing of local wildlife

VEGGIESAILAD- Kook Street sailing at the end of summer @low tide

BILLYBOB-ING- inadvertent trolling for neighbourly same-gender coveralls-wearing companions at Washinton State rest stops by displaying ones wares during midnite summer heat

I thought getting SEWERED was specific to slogging/swimming through the Cook St Outfall.

I thought it was called the LIP because its the first part of the wave that gets a taste of you before the rest of the wave fully digests you.

yes i thought getting "sewered" is when a lull or breakdown at kook st. sends you drifting or swirling as the case may be down thru the unmentionable zone - often with an audience of 911 callers on the point. Personally ive never had the pleasure.

Hey Downwind Dave...what o you call a Zoolander that then captures the image of himself on the webcam and then sends it to all his windsurfing buddies? Just wondering (of course)

To add to Kus' definition of hate- I often uses the term as an adjective ( word modifying a noun or pronoun) to describe painful wounds associated with our sport. For example, Kus is sporting a hate nose or, Phatbudda has an open sucking hate foot or hate foogina. Although my rib is healing, I often refer to my separated rib as the hate lump. Finally, after several days in a row at the Jetty most sailors get a very bad rash around the throat; back of the neck and sometimes in the groinodial regionitis. Most would call this a bad rash. Few people realize that the actual medical term for this condition is "hate rash" or, if it develops into a painful oozing sore, one might refer to this as the hate welt.
