Nice find. Some wild footage - I liked the last 10 secs the best. That soundtrack really gets me pumped up. I can't wait to try some rail rides on my next session.

Windoc you should have shown this clip to me sooner. I obviously bought the wrong mistral for wind and waves! My board is way too short and needs another fin :shock: !

ahhh ... those were the days. slippery decks, tough, slippery booms, 1 sail for all winds. :D

It was fun, though, despite the gear limitations.

One sail for all winds? No, no, NO! The high wind sails had 1/3 of the mast sticking out the top, and no battens because the leach was concave. That kept the CoE low and on the stiffest part of the mast. The CoE still shifted all over the place, but because the booms were so long and the sail reached the end, the CoE could move far enough for a First Downs without becoming uncontrollable.

& don't forget those 'high wind' daggerboards. My roommate used to make them from plywood. You couldn't count on the plastic fins they were like noodles. Oh & lots of crushed masts from bending on those booms. & how about http://www.jarvisbayestates.com/images/windsurfer.jpg for a bit of history.

I found an old 'hi wind daggerboard' in my shed this summer. A Windsurfer official one, not plywood. Red-white-blue striped ribbon for the top strap. I think I threw it out - maybe should have kept it for the wall.

Do you remember when full-batten sails started when the concave-leach sails were found not to work in big Hawaiian swell, so they developed the 'Maui fathead' sail that had several full-length battens at the head, and a stiffer mast to make it work..... Wasn't long before draft-stability was the big thing for sail developers.
