Where to camp - beginner/intermediate windsurfer

Post by TooManyChildren »

I am looking for a place to take my multiple age-group children to camp - but where I can get away to windsurf (I've only been doing it for about 2 months and am heavily addicted) . . . since some of the group are older teenagers and some younger elementary schoolers I need to be somewhere close to other amenities (Nitinat would probably only be OK for a day or two) . . . I love Hornby Island but it doesn't appear that there is any windsurfable bays there. Tell me I am wrong. What I need is a place where the younger ones can swim (6 & 8 years old) and the older ones can hang out and get into trouble (17 & 19 girls). I don't mind camping somewhere and taking road trips as long as they don't exceed ~15 minutes - the cut off for that well known and always annoying "are we there yet?" ("have we parked yet?"). Winds should be enough that I can at least practice beach starting . . . and just maybe try and kill myself with the harness (I have a need to experience "over the handlebars") . . .

China Creek just out of Port Alberni might be ok. for you. Summer thermals just like nitinat but more civilized; food, showers, etc. The kids could play while you surf. The teenagers might find some appropriate trouble in town. Telephone the campsite and make a reservation if you can. I haven't sailed there for years but had good times there when our kids were small. Choppy, rounded rock beach (not so bad). Decent learner's situation. Weird colored water.

Where is China Creek from Port Alberni? I live in Nanaimo and would like to try to windwsurf there when I can't get to Nitinat. Is everything fairly self explanitory or is there anything I should know. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

:) Hey man I just got back (2 weeks ago!) from Hornby. I put my 9 year old on a 12 ' windsurfer hull & she was the Tribune bay surf Diva.. I'm a big fan of 'brads dads land', sometimes you do get what you pay for! With south wind in Georgia st. it rolls right in to Tribune.Check those forecasts! I wouldn't recommend China creek for a newbie. Nitinat is where it's at for learning to wind surf..Lots of help & cheap gear...Take a canoe or kayak paddle and let the kids play on the water until the wind is up at 11:00......Those girls wont be lonely either! Check out the windsurfing "links" from this site & good luck!
Thermals are good.

It's those girls not being lonely that would concern me about Nitinat . . .

I'll let you camp in my back yard! i mean it's close to all the major spots, the young ones can goto the park older ones have lots do! coem on now! haha j/k um Personaly i'd think nitinat would be okay i've been going there since i was 16, um ya and it really depends on your kids interest on the non windy days i would go exploring the river and stuff. Other than that I dunno maybe leave the older kids at home to take care of the young ones?

rathtrevor beach is nice, it blows there sometimes and kids love it. Tribune bay is good too so dont write off hornby. Lots of kids at nimpkish, swimming (fresh water!) and biking around.
I have a hard time getting out now i have 1 kid - with 4 you are doomed. good luck!
