This is so bad, that sewage plant would also destroy the seal/sea lion eggs nesting area near clover point (they usually hatch in the March-April time frame).

Yes

I am willing to adopt a sea lion egg. If that helps.

Yes, wouldn't the environment be so much better off if we just kept pumping our sewage into the ocean :?:

It's not about whether or not a sewage treatment plant is required.

It's about where it should be located or rather where it should not be located.

Much as I hate to admit it, Clover Point is actually a good location and it should improve the waters locally, even though it means I and a few others lose access to windsurfing from the ramp at Clover Point and have to go back to the stairs. Every location has a reason why it should not be in their backyard, as sailors ours is a pretty trivial one, especially since it'll get rid of the problem we face actually being out there and in the results of the raw dumping.

Perhaps the thrust should be to save the Ocean. Clover Point will still be there, just altered a bit !

Since this subject is off topic for this forum I apologize for starting this thread.

I would just like to post some links that were eye opening for me and encourage anyone who is interested to take the considerable time required to look into it for themselves. The beaconhillparkhistory.org site is quite amazing as well.

As a newcomer to Victoria I was not aware of the history of the sewage treatment issue in Victoria. As a resident of the Fairfield area who visits the Clover Point park every day I was motivated to sign the petition against a sewage treatment plant in my backyard for the obvious reasons. Some of the comments I have read here led me to spend the time to research the issue in depth.

It appears that the real question is why the CRD is considering spending a billion dollars on something that probably isn't necessary, not on where to put it.

I think this article from the Times Columnist sums it up best.

---------------------------------
Leadership needed in sewage issue
by DR. SHAUN PECK - TIMES COLONIST. OCTOBER 14, 2014

...
Since 2006, when the CRD was ordered by the province to come up with a plan for land-based treatment, the judgment of marine scientists, public health officials and engineers has largely been ignored.

Very credible marine scientists, including several from the University of Victoria, have presented convincing evidence that the present practice of discharging the liquid waste (which is 99 per cent water and has preliminary treatment by screening) into the marine waters off Victoria is causing only a minimal effect on the ocean floor.

These carefully considered opinions, based on the best science, are that the present discharge into the unique marine receiving environment off Victoria is highly effective in treating the effluent without the need for land-based treatment.

Given the enormous cost of any sewage treatment plan, we should challenge those seeking local office to champion an approach to sewage treatment that is based on using the best available science.

Increased saturation = more toxins in the ocean

Gary C i think you might be barking up the wrong dog here, a lot of members swim in the ocean off clover point daily. Not the best group to rally for continued raw sewage dumping.

I would urge everyone to NOT sign the petition to save Clover Point.

If anyone thinks sewage is not damaging the ocean off of Victoria and surrounding municipalities then watch this video and read the information below it on the Youtube page:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNR1dfcJn30

Personally, I will not kite down at Dallas Road anymore, to my own personal sadness, and haven't done so for years because of the water conditions (I know kiters who have been infected with meningitis from kiting down at Dallas Road).

Acidifying the ocean with sewage and filling the water column with excessive organic compounds, nitrates, ammonia, and waste, along with disease and drug residue, not to mention the silting of the bottom of the ocean floor, is hardly making the ocean environment healthy. Out of sight and out of mind doesn't make it right.

touchy subject for sure!! I support sewage treatment but understand both arguments for and against... spending almost a billion dollars to get a tertiary treatment plant is crazy!!

Clover point is going to have an outfall no matter what happens with this project and once they're all done you won't even know its there.. like the current one

I have mixed feelings about sewage treatment for victoria.

But regardless of that, siting this at Clover seems pretty wacky. Sewage or not, I'd argue that putting any major industrial use along the most scenic stretch in Victoria is kinda stupid. No matter where in Victoria the facility may be, the sewage gets pumped there and then pumped out to discharge ... so place it in one of the industrial areas around Greater Victoria, where the use fits with the zoning and surrounding uses.

So taxpayers should pay an extra approximately $300 million dollars so the sewage treatment isn't in a scenic location where all the infrastructure is already located? Ya, that makes lots of sense. The pipes are already there so lets use them.

Besides the plan is to put the treatment plant underground, from what I understand, just like the current pump station at Clover.
