started out weird and gusty, swell riding with little wind. sat on the beach for an hour or so with Dave and Chris, then the freight train of massive swell appeared on the horizon. big swell out of no-where. then the wind. 15 minutes of pure fun :D :D :D , some of the best Kook swell I've ever seen. then, it switched back to 3 foot swell and 30 knots of wind. Chris hucking in the gale :!:

Ahhh back in the toasty Gorge. The day starts slow – 5.8 warm up trying tricks for an hour then it kicked up to 5.0 and the swells started rolling. Got in a couple of 3/4 back loops before the wind came off again and most people packed up and went home. Waited for a while then decided I don’t have big gear for nothing so I got out the freestyle board and 5.8 and had a blast for another hour working on the usual moves until I decided that I couldn’t come home until I could tack so I worked on tacks for ... :) A half day of great sailing. Fully downhauled/outhauled the 5.0 for half the session. Numerous sailors with broken booms. 40% success on inbound jibes, 100% failure on outbound jibes. Lots of air with the carve, but I think it's time for a smaller board. :) Fog bank was creeping into the narrows....

Forecast says northerly again so we head for Oceanside. The fog is right at the beach but it’s just sailable so I rig up the 5.8 and head into the fog on my lonesome. It’s marginal. I can plane once I’m out of the break but each time I come in for a ride it’s a sloppy schlogfest. I didn’t sail all that long when we decided to load up and head back to the Gorge. Just south of Oceanside we look down on this cool looking little beach near a resort called Happy Camp and head in for a look. It’s a co ... (more)

Another day in Paradise! Cave in the AM, then sailing at noon. Backed off a little so I had lunch, then off for photos by Maeve. Body drag had Downwind Dave seal of approval (nearly lost board shorts on that one!), lots of planing gybes. Girls wanted to stay another day which is always a good sign. Work, who needs it? Crowded but great vibes on land and water. Sore muscles in cheeks from smiling so much - sailing was euphoric, heavy endorphines in the bloodstream!

Then immedialty tossed 25% of a back loop. Thanks for the inspiration to the spectators on the log. DWD, Naomi, Sue, Julia, and Tobin. See you all again in two weeks. Next time with a helmet.

Sailed downwind with the forward crew...me tagging along as I am still not part of that crew. Winddoc was very inspiring...you really can do end-over-end forwards at Nitinat. Tried some "impossible at Nitinat Lake" back loops and actually had some fun turns on the swell. Unfortunately still having problems committing to the forward loop. It will come...maybe when my Gath helmet arrives that I got off of EBay' some polyurethane courage'?

Another great day - warm and windy-on the Naish 5.0 except for 2 runs trying out a 4.1 for Heather - thanks Dave and Barb, she really likes it. Had an awesome weekend - to the river with kids, met tons of new folks - lots from Squamish and Whistler, and even new friends from Duncan (Downwind Dave and Julia), and Nanaimo (Naomi and friend from Vancouver), and even some from the homeland (Mark and Siobhan). Thanks for showing the kids the ferrets, Norbert - very cool!

another blast of a day sailing with many friends at the lake. I was a little less "on" than yesterday, but still a fun day. nailed another upwind-360, stalled out most others. tried a few more loops, morewind-style, low and safe with maximum back splash (thank god for neoprene). need to get more schooling from windDoc on how to really do them. BigWave hucking and looking mean. TheLaw slashing every swell and charging into backloops.

Slowish start for the real 5.0 conditions, but eventually it really kicked in. Sailed the bottom of the lake again, this time with the Law and the rest of the crew. More huckage. Tried a forward on the back of a riplet near the boat launch and got thoroughly schooled due to lack of appropriate pop. Had some really fun forwards when the wind and swell peaked. A great weekend; lots of people in the campground but a good vibe. Thanks for feeding me John and Lisa and Mike and Corinne. You guys rock.

Crab and steak for dinner on the beach. MMMMMM perfect Nitinat times. Beach "fire" (big candle) with Scott Carolyn and girls Jennifer (who had used me as a gybe mark earlier) and Katlyn (almost gybing). Great to have these girls as role models for my youngest!

after a 2 year absence it was great to get back to the training grounds. seems that this is the place where I learn most new moves. after many attempts this season, finally got 2 clean upwind-360s. then, moved on down to the huck-zone with BWD, Winddoc, Tom, Fish, Barb, Mike, for a little forward action. Somehow windDoc was pulling off near endos in the 2 ft chop. BWD chucking loops. I threw a few loop splats. with enough attempts, I'll eventually sail away from one.

Flew Paul Betts Cabrina Crossbow. This is the next generation kite. has a huge range and very fast turning. This type of hybrid kite is well worth investigating. Thanks Paul.

2nd sesh on the 9m(same conditions that I sailed the crossbow in) Hence the range of the crossbow(12m) is roughly that of a traditional 14m-9m. It even turns faster than my 9m and has 100% depower.

Great to be back at the lake....it's so nice and warm. Worked on some of the old school spinny tricks on the big gear. Had a short session downwind and tried some vulcans and forwards in the head on chop. Accidentally did a stalled forward and landed on my head mostly. My tips for a stalled forward - jump into the air, think about sheeting in, but then consider the consequences and pain that could result, then also consider "friends" chanting biggaydave if you don't sheet in, so then decide to sheet in but ... Sailed the bottom of the lake with Tom, Barb, Dave F., John, Mike, Dave B, and Mark S. in search of head on ramps. Huckfest ensued. Dave is working on his flatwater stalled forwards nicely. Fun session.

Dropped family off at airport and headed south on a weak Gorge forecast for the weekend. Checked the hatchcam from a small town library to decide Gorge or coast and two hours later was rigging up the 4.2 at the Hatch for a wicked kick-off to the trip. Super warm – boardshorts and rashguard and not too crowded with the weak weekend forecast.
