Unlike others, I am not a huge fan of going out in heavy wind, but since today was likely the only windy day for the rest of the week I chose to venture forth. Certainly the sunshine was also enticing and so I pumped my nearly new 8m kite and got a launch from j_dog. There were unpredictable 10 knot gusts but I somehow miraculously timed my launch and walk down the windward side of Clover to coincide with "calmer" wind. I got a clean start past the shore break and charged upwind, with help from the strong wind and reasonable chop. I had low expectations for any ridable swell fronts but I was pleasantly surprised by the opportunities I was presented with. I tried to charged upwind on the reaches towards the shore and then turned hard onto toeside to engage with whatever I was presented with. Happily, there were some really nice swell faces that coincided with my gybes and which made for some fun swell riding and slashing. Some swell faces were well formed enough to allow me to do 2 or 3 top turns and still stay with the swell line. Sweet! I am also chuffed to have made a practically perfect tack turn on heavy wind and sea (There were other attempts which I omit to log here). I am sure it was pure luck but I am still feeling special about it. I tried to time my exit and landing in a "lull" and it more or less worked out for me. However, I was reminded of why I am not a huge fan of heavy wind because when I came in there was no one around. I had to self-land and, although I am pretty good at that, with the big wind it was definitely a little scary. In the end it was all good, but I like to measure my sessions over a large sample set of successes and windy days make me feel like I am going to lose my streak.
