Crazy day. I woke up to the news from Alain that Greg Caws had passed away on Wednesday. I didn't know Greg all that well, but we had chatted many times at the beach over the past year and a half. We were at similar levels in terms of our wingfoil progression, so we had lots to discuss! Earlier this year, I remember talking to him about how we were both dreaming of just getting a solid 2 minutes of controlled foiling. It seemed like a faraway goal, but we both got there eventually. Greg came by my house this summer to pick up a 4m wing that I was selling, and we learned that we had a lot of things in common: we both have two daughters, both in the tech sector, and both spent a fair amount of time in Kingston, Ontario. By October I remember running into Greg on the beach after a session and he was so stoked that he was getting controlled foiling runs on both his good and bad side. I don't remember ever seeing him so excited, which is saying a lot because as most of us here know, he was a super upbeat guy! What an amazing example of positivity and warmth Greg set for us all. I'm really going to miss seeing him at the beach.
The forecast for today looked poor, so I was happily surprised when ULR sent out a text on the group thread just before 2pm to say that he was rigging up his ultralight setup at Willows. I headed down, rigged up and launched with Tweezer. ULR was out there making it look easy, but I slogged for the first 45 min. But then -- TA DA -- the wind picked up to a glorious 14 knots or so for a solid hour. The wind was steady the whole time, with super flat water and gorgeous lighting as the sun was going down. All the sudden getting on foil was easy, I could work on gybe practice and woo-hoo at Tweezer with each pass. Great session. Hard not to appreciate the ability to foil, in a beautiful place like Victoria, on a day like today!
