Keep in mind that there`s a 6 knot wind minimum. They have it this low because they HAVE to hold races. They won`t wait around for 20 knots and possibly have no event.

Several times back in the 80`s we would go out in canoes at Cook st , armed with machetes, and cut paths through the kelp. Worked for a while but quickly grew back. We`ve done that trip a few times , once from Esquimalt lagoon to Cook and a couple from Cook to Esquimalt and back. Pretty simple. Best to do it in early afternoon while the wind still has some south in it, that way it`s less turbulent near the lagoon and then head from the lagoon to the south side ...
