Thanks Richi That is about how my 9'5", 155l Wide Point is under sail. It can plane under sail but it seem to want to suck down onto the water and requires a huge amount of wind in the sail to plane. Using it to plane is way more effort that it is worth. If there is enough wind to make it plane...

At our Pipers Debriefing with the coast guard, they confirmed that SPOT was not the way to go. They said that PLB or similar was the way to go. Saul can confirm/fill in their recommendations regarding this as he had detailed conversations with them regarding PLB. Technologies/terminologies that I am...

DWD, thanks for the info.

I agree about the numb hands. They do have a single twist version where you do not have to do the threading.

Tru Flare Pen Launch Mini Flares

Does anyone have any experience with the Tru Flare Pen Launch Mini Flares. They sell them at MEC. They are very compact and are claimed to be water resistant as well as reasonably priced. There are several videos on YouTube showing their use. The Pen can Launch Bear Bangers, Whistle Flares and Red, ...

Very good post Saul. Also, at minimum, know the standard distress signal, (waving your arms over your head). and use it while you are still within the site of people on the shore if you are in the slightest doubt that you cannot self rescue or body drag in. If it is reported that a distress signal i...

And it would have been so easy for Rescue to have come out from departure bay and intercept him as he pasted Stevenson point. I had first thought that this was the case when they said he was ok and the RCMP Officer at Pipers said they were going to meet him when he came in and be sure he was alright...

Or you could have surf police like these. Surfer detained and threatened with charges for drop in. First on the wave/closest to the peak you decide. Looks like they both enjoyed the wave. Can't people just share sometimes :?:
