Wind Formula for mid-island inlets, any comments?

General discussions about the weather, incoming storms and swell, complaining, why is it always so windy at night etc.

Wind Formula for mid-island inlets, any comments?

Post by Sandy Beach »

This is a question that I had about figuring out what the wind might do in Port Alberni...

For a rough estimate of wind in the mid-island inlets:

Temperature Difference between Tofino (coast) and Port Alberni (valley) and multiply by a factor of three to help predict the wind strength???

ex. Sunday, July 11th: Port Alberni 30 and Tofino 19 = 11 x 3 = 33knots
The bigger the air temp difference, the stronger the wind.

We'll see what materializes with this weekend's winds in Port Alberni.

note: with the valley's heat this week, the water has warmed up a lot in the Alberni inlet.

tomorrow ok (my guess: 5.5-6.5), wed and thurs the better days 4.5-5.5 according to the model. let see how close I get, Rob 8)

you want westerly flow on the coast and the temp diff between tofino and PA. If Pipers is forecast to go in the morning on NW, very good chance for PA. IF wind for west coast, Tofino, so much the better

Tip from Gwind.......look for Qualicum winds in the North Georgia Strait forecast. So you know who to blame when it doesn't work.......

Pretty good Kus. We'll have to add the Kus report to the forecast page now too  Tues looked good but never got past about 20 knots. Wed was 27-32 by 4pm but got gusty and fizzled around 6pm when a big cloud rolled in :? Today should be good once the cloud burns off.

I don't get it :? day_of_month x Mont_Num/2 = wind_speed ? :?

So for today July 22 it should give us 22x(6/2)=66 knots?

I dont believe it :P

So then applying Murphy's law and the inverse correlation between ability to play and wind speed we have:

day_of_month x Mont_Num/2 + (lunar_cycle^3)/2200 = wind_speed

The last couple of days have been an early blow steady 25 knots starting 11 -12. Getting holy and dieing off around 5 I would imagine more of the same this weekend, however the historical wind starts at 2-4and goes till dark
