olympus camera : indestructable

Post by Sandy Beach »

Elvis, after that story, I think I'll go out and get one too.
Our 6 yr old daughter really wants a camera for her birthday, and this may be the 'unbreakable' digital one we are in the market for.
Although, I admit to dropping camera's occasionally after enjoying some etoh sometimes too
Thanks for sharing your confessional...too funny :D

Right on sandy beachs,
I can't tell you anything about the quality of the pics because we haven't used it much yet, but I know what you mean when you talk about a cam for the kid. We also bought my daughter the same cam(850) for xmas. she has destroyed 4 cameras in 5 years (she's 15 now) and we're hoping this one stands up to the abuse better. So far so good....
Good luck...

Somehow, I doubt your 'real' name is Elvis, but if it is, may I have your autograph???

ah, if it was only the cam, that'll be ok but she'll of course need a place to store her million pix that are ALL priceless so better get a serious computer to go with it, haha :P Hence, my kids can use MY camera and I get delete rights

Here is another one.

Canon PowerShot D10 (water-shock-cold proof)
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0902/09021805canond10.asp

Not a very wide angle (35mm eq.), but the brand has a good reputation. VGA video only. Due out in May 2009 for $329 USD.

I still think the Panasonic DMC-TS1 is the best of all options (but expensive).

Here is a really good review:

Pentax has improved their design with the Optio W80, due out this July! It is now shockproof (1m). Lots of new features. My camera store told me it should retail for about $379. Maybe pick one up in Oregon in July, if the dollar is favourable!

Panasonic TS3 just came out this month.

Image

Waterproof to 12m, Shockproof to 2 m, Coldproof to -10.

Full HD video. No 60 fps though. It has a handy dedicated video on/off button!

28mm equivalent to 4.6 zoom. Leica lens!

GPS, compass, altimeter. (!) Edit: I'm testing out one of these for work. The GPS is slow and only updates periodically, so if you want accurate location information you have to be patient and force the GPS to acquire satellites while you wait in one spot (takes about a minute). The compass function works well. RoboGeo is still the best way to georeference your photos.

$375 at thecamerastore

warning, got this for a replacement of my SW770 Tough which was a pretty decent camera, this new one albeit having some neat features, has serious operational problems, (eg. cannot charge battery or spare battery without having the camera out of commission; turns on while in pocket playing slideshows, every picture regardless of settings comes out blurry; settings change without rhyme or reason etc.) STAY AWAY, major piece of crap :x

Gonna look at what you posted 4J, like the looks of the lumix, any users of the new stuff yet out there? :?:

The Pentax Optio W90 is another option.
Image
20' waterproof, 4' shockproof -10 coldproof.
We have these at work. They are more rugged than previous versions. It has a good feel to it.
HD movie 30 fps. The macro is amazing if you like photographing small stuff.

If you can still find them they should be going for around $225.

I have the Pentax W90. Did all the usual comparisons and decided this was the one for me. Main reasons for purchase were the size, awesome strap with carabiner (for attaching to belt loop or whatever, perfect when traveling) 5x optical, durability, HD movies, great macro mode and one other unusual feature for a water proof camera. The ability to do time lapse shooting. No regrets on the purchase other than the screen size is a bit small and quite a few shots weren't well focused. But that could be attributed to me getting used to the camera.
Why aren't YOU out there?

I concur with Kus on the Olympus Stylus Tough 8010. We tried it for about a month, and like Kus, every pic regardless of settings was garbage. I thought we bought a lemon but it seems that the camera may be total Shite. We took it back and got a refund.
