Weather Station I want to donate to a good location

Post by Jim »

I have a good wether station that I can't install in a good spot for wind and I thought that maybe the Cook Street web cam could use one. It has two wireless remotes that receive data and software to connect to a PC. IsHow would I connect to the Cook Street webcam owner? Jim 250 661-6135. Shame to waste a good instrument.

Huge thanks to Jim for donating a high end Davis weather station to the website, worth over $1k 8)

Now where can we put it? The easiest choice would be on that nice flagpole in the Willows cam. Any other ideas?

Thanks for the suggestions.

JR - no, I'm not even sure where it could be installed to give a reliable wind reading or how long it would last

Nitinat - well I had a bad experience trying to install a webcam up there a long time ago, and is there really a good spot for it that would give an accurate wind reading?

Renfrew - it's possible I guess. I'm not sure how many people would use it and I know nothing about an installation spot that has internet and that would give a good indication of the wind...?

Keep the suggestions coming.

We still have the CB weather station that will hopefully be installed at a beach front location downwind of the old spot at some point in the future.

Thought JR was a long shot!

Maybe somewhere around longbeach? possibly co-ordinate something with the surfcam.ca people?

sorry i was thinking 'cam' - a weather station would obviously have to stick out in the wind someplace.

I had thanked Jim a whole while back and am glad he got in touch with you. Willows is probably best, the rest we have good reports for unless they go down. Nat is a given with sun, JR is gonna get destroyed  Thx Jim and Dave for playing with the toys

actually i don't think jr is such a bad idea, hear me out. first off it is not a cam so it's not exactly real time wave info. secondly, the forestry office there is located right next to sewers which has decent exposure to the SE and W wind. finally they have a heli pad there so might be interested in the wind gauge, and forestry operations always want to be on top of rainfall. Lots of days we have good wind info for gordos but you always wonder what is going on up the coast. i have some contacts out there if you think it is worth following up on. :D

I wouldn't be completely against having it at the forestry office, so sure, let us know what you find out. We could do a secret install and make the page members only and not advertise it at all. I still see potential problems though and I'm the guy that's always out there with the big BWD logo on the van.

Willows would be the easiest with an install done in a few hours. It doesn't seem to be too exciting lately weather wise though, but I'm sure people would use it.

Another option is Clover Point. Long ago we had permission from the city through Starboard Steve to mount a station on a light stand down there. Back then it was a build your own station and it never happened. Now there are options - we have the weather station, we just need to get the data from the station. We could use long range antennas and relay it to the webcam house, or Davis sells a self contained solar cellular modem that sends data at 5min updates. It is $625 + $295/yr for a service plan. The weather station doesn't need power and would just clamp to the pole (up high) and send data. I assume there is cell coverage at Clover pt? Does anyone want to look into seeing if we could install it there and is it worth it?

One vote for Clover Point, and a recommendation to avoid JR and PR, as it would ultimately be a waste of a great station when someone steals/ kills it.

JR would most likely result in a destroyed weather station, and potentially negative flac for Dave. Seems like Clover would be really handy and welcomed no?
