Hell Man Cam!

Nice work. Fantastic. Heck of a lot better than just holding a digital camera while riding....

VERY NICE VID! Sure like the wide angle gopro - my standard lens one will shortly be for sale! Great to be able to critique someone else's sailing. I'll have lots of tips for finishing the rotation off for Bean next time i see him! ( NOT). Some pretty slick tacks there too thanks for including them.

New Head cam video from Feb 1, '09

Post by winddoctor »

Columbia Beach, Feb 1, '09

Thanks for the loan of the cam, Dave! Can't wait for a solid day to play with the cam again. Any suggestions on how to get better video quality? Mine seems much worse than the other vimeo vids for some reason.

Nice work! It looks like vimeo stretched it into widescreen? I haven't used it yet, but it must give you some options when you upload to keep it in standard definition. I'm not sure what s/w you use for editing, but I try and get it to 640x480 with high quality (~100MB) and then upload. Here are some suggestions on the vimeo site:

Nice tunes and don't worry your loops will come together one day.

Another head cam vid from a recent fun day at CB before it really picked up. Thanks to BWD for salvaging the footage off of the memory card.

Nice video Windoc! I find these very instructive. After watching so many of these I've found that personal styles are much more evident in the helmetcam footage than in video taken from the beach. For example, it is possible to see your distinctive way of micro-adjusting your rig...moving it quickly back and forth. I also like seeing where you are looking during certain moves. What a great learning tool. That new board really does turn! Is that the BWD loop that resulted in nose damage?

Thank you and keep 'em comin'! Are you going to get your own dedicated camera for the Oregon coast?

Nope, but one similar. I can see what I'm doing wrong now - pretty much everything.

Thanks guys!

I also really enjoy the aspect of seeing what you are REALLY doing vs. what you THINK you are doing from watching the videos. It's a bit depressing to see all of my loops end in crashes or "nearly made it" landings. It's just making me hungrier to get more consistent with backs and get more dry landings on forwards consistently. I'm learning a lot about body and board angle positioning on landing backloops from watching the videos. I'm pretty sure I know what I need to change in technique now to get more hits and less splats. It's also great to be able to watch Paul and BWD's beautiful forward initiations in slo-mo to learn from. Thanks again for the cam loan, BWD!

I finally edited the GoPro cam footage I had from the June and July Oregon trips. The helmet cam is from the June trip when the swell was 6-8ft, although it doesn't look it. Sadly there is a lack of action in the video:

Excellent form at the beginning with the pre-sail stretching maneuver.

Nice! Lack of action? Air, waves, top and bottom turns, and more continuous footage than you ever see on 'commercial' DVDs. I think I like the helmet cam best for seeing the most action and surrounding waves, though the boom mount is nice for variety. The wide angle is fantastic! Did the 'Said the Whale" group who did the second song have one in Napolean Dynamite? Sounds a bit like the soundtrack.
