Sharks and Roosters

Post by KUS »

There were so many good shark stories and links, thought I would start a thread so Nanmoo can review them all in one place:

I had to do a search for windsurifng and shark attack as I had never heard of an attack involving a shark and windsurfer.

Wasn't hard to find one off the west coast of Australia....it was too easy to find this so I am going to stop looking!

"I was at the 3 mile camp when the incident happened. One of the Geraldton locals sailed out from the key hole at the camp on Friday afternoon in light winds. He was out the back of the bommie and his board stopped suddenly and he was thrown forward onto his sail.A shark around 8 feet had bitten the back of the board leaving a teeth marks the size of a large dinner plate. I can confirm this as I saw the board afterwards. Apparently the shark then launched its self onto the sail and the guy ended up with grazes down his legs from the abrasive skin of the shark. In the confusion they separated and he managed to water start and and head backin. One of the fishermen saw the board and made the comment it was red and white like the most popular lure in Australia and it was no suprise to him fish would be interested it being trawled throuhg the water at around 8 knotts.
Everyone at the camp was in a state of shock for aout 5 minutes and then went sailing again. Mind you the surf line up was pretty quiet the next day."

I still wonder if one would bother you if you were in the water trying to water start. I can see that being less likely based on the fact that you wouldn't look as much like a sea lion. This guy was on the board and slogging, so you'd think from below it could look like a sea lion...that is what I going to go with to make myself feel better!

I don't like this one because you'd assume that his sail would have been in the water, thus making him not look like many sea lions that I have seen before.

Now I am going to stop looking......

Wingnut has the same model! I saw the photos of the board and bite marks. Wait a minute, my wave board is red and white too. Uh oh.

According to http://www.sharkresearchcommittee.com/dist.htm you don't have to worry too much if the great white is smaller than 3m :D as that is when "adult White Sharks are apparently opportunistic predators and will readily take any prey species that is available" and you can also expect the odd "polaris attack"....now that one would be a great little surprise :? Maybe carrying a little kit to deal with the so-called "bite-and-spit" strategy wouldn't be a bad plan to get yourself into shore   apparently it is very likely skinny humans would be rejected after a taste....another reason to lose some weight

I saw a great cartoon illustrating this once. I wish I could find it. It had two sharks talking and went something like this:

After biting and spitting out a diver:
SHARK 1: "Blehk! That tastes terrible!"
SHARK 2: "Don't you know you're supposed to peel them first?"

There is also this one:

And, as several people said before, a good reason to not sail with BWD! Great whites wash up dead on Haida Gwaii beaches fairly often, and are seen alive by fishermen WAY UP NORTH there from time to time; I don't see why they wouldn't be cruising up JdeF occasionally at least as far as Gordos. :D

There's a whole series of these

we figured the waving of the hand over the head could also signify the international signal for Shark (and Chicken simultaneously)!

I had a tough time getting past "The cock, wearing a razorsharp knife...".

DWD, The reference to roosters is Nanmoo's international signal for sharks (hand held with fingers together over head to mimic a shark-fin) looking much more like a rooster's comb (fingers splayed). This is very confusing on the Oregon coast. The thought of being attacked by a rooster in the Pistol River break just creeps me out.

Doc is correct, if you see me sail past sporting my hand on my head mimmicing a shark-fin - It means I have just spotted a shark and you best be heading to shore. If the fingers are seperated and wiggling the same holds true except that I have spotted a rooster. If only my middle finger is extended it means you likely just cut me off.
