Important survey: marine West Coast activities

Post by Sandy Beach »

As new residents in Port Alberni, we have been working closely with "West Coast Aquatics" to help shape and plan the future for the marine activities on the west coast of Vancouver Island, including the Alberni inlet.

Since our BigWaveDave community are mostly recreational stakeholders (windsurfers/kiteboarders/kayakers, etc) of the water/coast, I thought it was pertinent to solicit your input. West Coast Aquatics agrees that they want your valuable opinion to help shape the future.

Here's what Jake Martens, West Coast Aquatics sent for BWD:

Share Your Priorities and Knowledge and Help Shape the Future of Barkley & Clayoquot Sound

WHAT:

Take this online survey about your marine activities on the West Coast of Vancouver Island and the benefits you enjoy from those activities. The results will help identify perceptions of (1) the importance of different activities, (2) how activities and benefits might change if the ecosystem changes, (3) which ecosystem benefits or services are important, and (4) which planning goals are important.

WHY:

Our coastal waters support diverse and productive marine resources that provide food, jobs and recreation for thousands of residents and visitors. Increasing activities combined with challenging economic factors has resulted in increasing competition for limited space and resources. Water sports are growing rapidly in the Alberni Inlet and elsewhere and your knowledge, priorities and input is important to include in planning for the region.

WHO:

The Tsawalk Partnership is a community driven marine planning process for the west coast of Vancouver Island. Its led by West Coast Aquatic, a regional co-management board that brings together governments, industry and communities to develop projects, initiate partnerships and recommend policies.
