IWT site says, "...The remainder dropped by the docks at the north end of Gold Beach for ice cream and seal watching at the Jetty." Might be worth checking out, but would mean driving down or a long walk. :?

Next week looks good. If all goes well I'm heading down with Dave C36 on Sunday.

The beaches look so much different this year and that's corresponding to the waves. Locals say the never ending rains washed away all the sand and it will take time to rebuild. There are no dunes at the cape right now just boulders you didn't know existed under the sand. Same at Pistol, the walk out us remarkably flat. Thus even though there was swell there wasn't much of a point in surfing. The jetties at the Rogue, Newport and Florence didn't look any better. In fact, and it pains me to say this, at one point there was only actual DTL wave at Pistol. The best setup I saw was the outter bar at Florence on the logo day I drove down. On smaller swell on the way home I feel like I checked every spot but it was nothing but dumpy closers. Still plenty of fun to be had but not typical summer sandbars.

Thanks for the detailed report Nanmoo. Are you still considering a second trip down for the camp or is that it for you this year, given this year's sand/beach profile/waves?

Thanks Tony, sad news as I definitely prefer sailing at the Cape.

Anyone know if Crescent City works on a NW swell? This and this seem to suggest it does.

On my epic Sunday we had larger W and WNW swell with a bit of smaller S higher period swell sneaking in. Part of the reason I went to CC was that Flo and Pistol were big and meaty as well as the Cape at a good size (but 2.9 wind) so I assumed CC would be a good size. Sadly it wasn't really which surprised me and leaves me clueless as to how that spot works. It's pretty exposed so I don't get why it would be so much smaller than even the cape.

I would think it would be okay. It is a bit protected from the N-NW swell but it should get some wrap around and be better the further S you go down the beach. Ideal direction is W-S but even the wind swell can be fun.

What's interesting about that pic is those funny great white shark-shaped islands to the left. Good thing there aren't any sharks in Oregon. I wouldn't go there otherwise. Right guys? Right??

Thanks Moo/BWD. Was thinking similar (good exposure you think it would wrap), but Moo's experience shows you just never know (recognize sample size is small with one).

 Glad to see the 'sharks' are swimming out and not in. :D

Going coastal again tmw. Headed back to the Cape. Might hit up some other spot on the way back to the gorge Thursday.
