Novice kitesurfer wishes info on areas of Oahu to hone skills.....calm,shallow water and lighter winds.

You won't find shallow water on Oahu, but head to Kailua on the Windward side and ask for directions to the beach park by Kalapawai Market. If the Trades are working it will be kiteable and it's a great spot. Of all the places I have ridden it has by far the most spectacular scenery and the locals are very friendly.

That being said you cannot ride on your own there if you don't have the basics down. You don't need to be able to stay upwind, but you'll need to have the rest dialed. If you don't, there a several schools that offer lessons right there.
