AC/DC

Port Alberni's inaugural sup event, ACDC was a huge success. The weather cooperated and so did the wind. 39 racers took part in the downwind challenge from China Creek to Canal Beach. Stu Robinson from Comox was the overall winner and men's 14' winner with a time of 55:32. BWD, DWD and virgin sup'er...

FOLO: check out the archives link on BWD under Port Alberni Harbour Quay. Info there back to 2010. Pretty regular summer thermals 8)

Canal Beach

Good points Greg. Ironically, our mayor used to be a lifeguard at Jericho years ago. He is quite familiar with how integral the sailing centre is to the Vancouver waterfront and has been pushing for something like that here for years. Given the industrial history of this town, it has been a hard sel...

port authority

UNfortunately Dale, the POrt Authority think they own the waterfront here and are a bit nervous that new recreational user groups are starting to use the same space. To quote a friend of mine who's a manager there, "we don't really know how to handle you guys. We've never had to deal with anyth...

the ultimate

Great wind chaser....unless the chase requires climbing a hill in which case, you'll be fashionably late 8)

touchy touchy

I agree with DWD. I'll move stuff if I feel it is at risk of getting damaged (or floating away) or if it is a risk to someone in the area (usually kids playing). I do it not because I'm a windsurfer, but because I care about the well being of others and their gear, and would hope that someone would ...

Herman

He was hanging out at kite beach building things last time we were there (1 month ago). Not sure if he's still around though.

downwinder

Sounds like a fun event. As an FYI, I did the island crossing in LaVentana this winter which was about 32 km. Most finished in 50-80 minutes. It's amazing how quickly you can cover that much ground. Distance wise, it seems like a marathon but time wise, it's just like a regular session. Pasta has do...

Port Alberni wind forecast

So now that the summer thermals are here, I thought I'd share the surface temperature map I've been using to forecast the winds in PA. It takes some trial and error to figure out the patterns that work but with a group of users contributing, we should be able to get it dialed :D Here's what I've fou...

gorge??

We're not necessarily committed to the Gorge, although we are looking forward to checking it out. We have 10 days to go somewhere (with kids) and wind is definitely on the agenda :D Coast? Nitinat? Nimpkish? Gorge? Also have the option of kiting or windsurfing, although we don't really have the luxu...

forecasting

There seems to be some discrepancy in the long range forecasts (go figure) Weather network is predicting close to 100F all week (July1-6) while a few other sites are in the 80's- low 90's. Is there a preferred site to use? Temira's seems to be more short range.

gorge trip

We're making our first ever  trip to the Gorge next week. Pretty stoked. I just checked the Weather Network long range forecast though and they're predicting temps close to 100F all week (Hood River). Is that going to kill the wind? Is there a better forecast page to use?
